Pioneering Education Since 1943

Founded on January 25, 1943, Dr EP Lekhela School stands as a beacon of educational progress in the old Greenpoint Location. As the first secondary school for Black students in the area, it marked a significant milestone in the community’s history. Under the visionary leadership of Mr. E.P. Lekhela, the school began with a modest team of six dedicated teachers and 139 eager students. Despite the challenges of limited resources, the school quickly became a cornerstone of learning and opportunity, fostering a spirit of resilience and ambition that continues to inspire generations.

Dr EP Lekhela School’s foundation was not just an educational milestone but a cultural and social turning point. It provided a platform for Black students to pursue secondary education at a time when such opportunities were scarce. The school’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity laid the groundwork for a legacy of academic and personal achievement. With a focus on community engagement and holistic development, the school has remained true to its mission of empowering students to reach their fullest potential.

1943

Inauguration of Dr EP Lekhela School

The school opens its doors as the first secondary school for Black students in the area, led by Principal Mr. E.P. Lekhela.

1957

Leadership Transition

Mr. E.P. Lekhela is promoted to Inspector of Education, and Mr. A.A. Matlhare takes over as principal, guiding the school through a period of growth and relocation.

1971

Relocation and Renaming

The school moves to Vergenoeg and is renamed Tidimalo Secondary, continuing its mission under new leadership.

1985

New Era Begins

The school transitions to a modern complex, enhancing facilities and introducing senior classes, marking a new chapter of expansion and excellence.

Dr. Ernest Pelaelo Lekhela

Dr. E.P. Lekhela was a visionary leader and the founding principal of Greenpoint Secondary School, established in 1943. His pioneering spirit and dedication to education paved the way for a new era in the community. As the first Black principal in the region, Mr. Lekhela championed the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and social change. He was instrumental in fostering relationships with local churches, which played a crucial role in supporting the school’s development. Under his leadership, the school grew from humble beginnings to become a beacon of hope and progress. Dr. Lekhela’s legacy continues to inspire generations of students and educators.

Ernest Pelaelo Lekhela was born in Kimberely on 04th April 1913. He received his
primary education at St Mathews Anglican Mission School, the Lyrdhurst Road
Public School and the perseverance C.E.C. Mission Practicing School in Kimberely.
From very humble beginnings he qualified as a teacher under the Cape Department
of Education. He obtained the School Teacher’s Music Certificate of the Tonic Solfa
College of Music (London) in 1936; the Laer Taalbond in 1938; a BA Degree in 1939; a
U.E.D in 1943; a B.Ed. in 1948; a M.Ed. in 1959 and a Doctor of Education in 1970
from the University of South Africa.
He has been involved in education and training for more than fifty years and during
his period he made significant contributions to the training of teachers and
community leaders; supervision of educational curriculum development with
specific reference to the teaching of the History of Education; the development and
advancement of education administration; the development of sports; Setswana
Literature and language development.
Ernest Pelaelo has served an assistant teacher; a principal; a supervisor of schools; a
lecturer and a professor of Education at the University of the North. Most of his
former students and protégés are currently making important contributions in
various fields, particularly in education, business and politics. He has supervised
and promoted several Masters and Doctoral candidates and has been external
examiner at the Universities of Fort Hare, Transkei and South Africa. In addition he
has written and published many articles, a book of Setswana Poetry and a Novel. He
has presented scholarly papers at both local and international conferences.
He has been a tirelessly and innovative educator, musician, businessman, sports
administrator and a devoted Christian. He was Chairman of the 1977 National
Education Committee of Bophuthatswana which, among others, recommended the
establishment of this university emphasizing the special functions a university has
op perform in a developing country. He was the first Vice-Chairman of the first
Council of Universities of Bophuthatswana and is currently serving as on numerous
educational and community boards including the Council of the Tlhabane College of
Education. During the 1992 UNIBO Graduation Ceremony, he reflected on: The role
of UUNIBO, past, Present and Future. The union the North conferred the status on
Emeritus Professor on him in 1977.
